The spice of life......no, really.

If you know me you know that I have a fondness for all things food. I like to grow it, cook it, share it, read about it, eat it, and even take pictures of it. After being given a book called "Everything I Ate" by Tucker Shaw (which came from a shelf somewhere in the Xavier bookstore and thankfully made its way into my hands) I was inspired to share a peek into my life not so much through words or candid shots of me with friends rather through the sometimes simple and sometimes elaborate gastronomic goodness that I experience each day. I am a rookie so not every meal makes it on camera but it's a start. Food brings people together. Food keeps culture and family tradition alive. Food is often tangible evidence of human desires and weaknesses. Food tells a story...and this happens to be a "piece" (ha) of mine. Indeed, I am what I eat.

Sunday August 29, 2010

10:30pm: My weakness....and that's all that needs to be said about that.
9:30pm: My attempt to make a vegetarian version of a traditional Brazilian dish known as feijoada. Essentially a black bean stew with sweet potatoes, red peppers, mango, and cilantro on a bed of brown rice. Maureen, one of the master teacher's on my Brazil trip who I like to think of as an "aspiring vegetarian" snail-mailed me this recipe when she found it in one of her cookbooks! The most impressive part of this dish is how it is literally a rainbow on my plate. Shared this with mom and Stef (although he had to put his in a tortilla to "hide" the veggies.) How he came to be such a picky eater I do not know.
2pm: Fruit smoothie and buttered toast at home with mom and Stef. An odd combo I know but every once in awhile I just need a simple piece of toast in my life. It's comforting :)

11:30am Homemade salsa! At home. With chips of course :)
